Más sobre A Gay Prisioner of War
Jiménez spent twenty years in prison for his 1981 conviction of seditious conspiracy against the United States government. Jiménez's family moved to Chicago a month after his birth in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico on April 3, 1956. At age of sixteen he learned about the colonial status of Puerto Rico and decided to dedicate his life to join the independence movement. He attended Tuley High School and Loyola University. In 1974, he was recognized by Chicago's Mayor Richard Daley, Sr. as the city's High School Senior Student of the Year.
He began his involvement with the FALN, to create awareness about the poor conditions of of Puerto Ricans living in Chicago and to denounce the colonial status of Puerto Rico. Jiménez was arrested on April 4, 1980, in Evanston, Illinois. At the time of the arrest, Jimenez declared himself a prisoner of war. All eleven were convicted for sedition in 1981. Although sentenced to ninety years in prison, Jiménez was pardoned by Bill Clinton, President of the United States on September 10, 1999.
Soon after his release, Jiménez returned for the first time to Puerto Rico, the country he had fought for but never seen since his infancy. There, he learned firsthand about the political, cultural and economic realities confronting Puerto Rico at the turn of the century.
Since 2009, Jiménez has been living in Chicago and working as an HIV/AIDS counselor for the Latino community at the VIDA/SIDA agency. Nowdays, he is the Director of VIDA Health Community Health Center focusing in HIV & STD services for HIV+ people.
